Here is a little step-by-step how to replace the aterpump seals on the YFZ.
Here the 04-05 yfz part numbers- Bearing-93306-00102-00 (B6001) Large oil seal- 93102-11008-00 Small oil seal- 93102-12106-00 ( SD-12-22-5- HS) Impeller- 5GR-12458-00-00 Side case gasket- 5TA-15462-00-00
If you smell anti-frezze or see anti-frezze around the frame or the skid plate on the right side of the quad (while sitting on it) more than likely the seals for the waterpump need to be replaced and the impellar is scored which caused the seals to fail.
You must remove the exhaust head pipe, engine oil and anti-frezze at least out of the water pump housing- you dont need to drain the entire cooling system.
You must remove the upper and lower oil lines in order to remove the side case.
First, remove the oil filter cover, oil filter, water pump cover and upper/ lower oil lines. Be careful there is a small o-ring on the oil line. make sure you have it on there and installed correctly when putting the oil lines back on.
Remove the impeller and inspect the shaft for grooves. Replace if neccessary. To remove the seals pry out the outer seal with a screwdriver or a pick. Removing the bearing is probably the most diffcult part of the job. I tapped it out from the outside with a screwdriver and then pryed the inner seal out.
Use some Lithium grease on the seals when reassembling everything and when the seals get reinstalled. The springs are to face away from each other or basically the springs are in the fluid, oil and anti-frezze.
Torque everthing back to spec and finish putting oil filter, oil and anti-frezze back in and you are done. Takes about an hour from start to finish and with all the parts cost is about $130.00 from yamaha dealer retail prices.
Here is a pic of the impeller shaft, seals, and bearings.
The 2006 and on Yfz motor dont have the open weep hole on the bottom of the housing. They now have a hose that runs down farther on the frame and then out. There also are better performing impellers from boyesen products which does come with a differ housing also. I have the boyesen kit now on the 04 yfz, there is a big differnce in pitch angles of the blade on the impellers from boyesen to stock.
